The Festival of Lights Diwali
This festival is celebrated to honour Rama-chandra, the seventh avatar (incarnation of the god Vishnu). It is believed that on this day Rama returned to his people after 14 years of exile during which time he fought and won a battle against the demon king, Ravana.
It is a 5 day festival celebrated by Hindus, Jains and Sikhs across the world.
For some it also coincides with harvest and new year celebrations. It is a festival of new beginnings and the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness.
People light thousands of clay lamps, and cover their houses in festive lighting.
